What is a Book Jacket (and Do You Actually Need One?)
If you’ve ever carried a book in your bag, chances are you’ve pulled it out later to find bent covers, creased pages, or mysterious marks you can’t explain.
As a lifelong book lover, that kind of damage feels a bit tragic.
That’s where book jackets come in.
What is a book jacket?
A book jacket (sometimes called a fabric book cover) is a reusable cover designed to protect your book while you’re reading or carrying it around.
Unlike disposable paper dust jackets, these are made from fabric and are designed to be used again and again.
My book jackets are adjustable and are available in multiple sizes, meaning they can fit a range of books - from smaller paperbacks through to larger novels.
Think of it like a protective layer that wraps around your book and keeps it safe from everyday wear and tear.
Do you actually need one?
Technically? No.
But if you:
Carry books in your handbag or backpack
Read on the go (school pick-ups, waiting rooms, cafés)
Like to keep your books in good condition
Or just enjoy a little extra personality in what you’re reading
…then a book jacket makes a real difference.
Why I started using (and making) them
I’ve always been someone who carries a book everywhere “just in case.”
But I got tired of my books coming out of my bag looking a bit worse for wear.
I wanted something that was:
Practical
Reusable
And honestly… a bit beautiful too
That’s what led me to start making my own fabric book jackets.
A simple way to protect your books
Book jackets are one of those small things that make everyday reading feel just a little bit nicer.
They help protect your books, add a bit of personality, and make it easier to take your current read wherever you go.
If you’re someone who always has a book on hand, it might be one of those simple upgrades that just makes sense.
